Role Overview

The Senior Software Engineering Manager: Web is responsible for leading the development, optimisation, governance, and delivery of enterprise web platforms and applications. This role ensures the delivery of secure, scalable, high-performing, and customer-centric digital experiences aligned with enterprise engineering standards and digital transformation objectives.

The role provides strategic and technical leadership for web engineering teams, driving modern web architecture, platform innovation, engineering excellence, and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will oversee the delivery of web solutions while ensuring alignment with security, performance, accessibility, and operational requirements.


Key Responsibilities

1. Web Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and execute the web engineering strategy, roadmap, and delivery approach aligned with enterprise architecture and digital priorities.
  • Lead modernization initiatives including:
    • Progressive Web Applications (PWAs)
    • Micro-frontends
    • Cloud-native web delivery
    • Responsive and adaptive design
    • API-driven frontend architectures
  • Evaluate emerging web technologies and recommend solutions that improve digital experiences and engineering capabilities.
  • Drive innovation through adoption of modern web development practices and frameworks.

2. Web Platform Delivery

  • Oversee the complete software development lifecycle for:
    • Web applications
    • Digital platforms
    • Enterprise portals
    • Customer-facing web solutions
  • Ensure web platforms are:
    • Secure
    • Scalable
    • High-performing
    • Accessible
    • Optimised across browsers and devices
  • Drive adoption of engineering best practices, including:
    • CI/CD pipelines
    • Automated testing
    • Containerised deployments
    • DevOps practices
  • Collaborate with backend, mobile, API, integration, and architecture teams to deliver seamless omni-channel experiences.
  • Ensure solutions meet business requirements, technical standards, and operational expectations.

3. Governance, Risk & Compliance

  • Establish and enforce secure coding standards and engineering practices.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable security, privacy, accessibility, and regulatory requirements, including:
    • Accessibility standards
    • Data protection requirements
    • Payment security standards where applicable
  • Implement application monitoring, observability, and performance management practices.
  • Ensure web engineering governance aligns with enterprise security, risk, and compliance frameworks.
  • Promote secure-by-design principles throughout the software development lifecycle.

4. Leadership & People Development

  • Lead, coach, and mentor web engineering teams, including:
    • Front-end engineers
    • UI developers
    • Web application specialists
    • Software engineers
  • Build technical capability in modern web technologies, including:
    • React
    • Angular
    • Vue.js
    • JavaScript/TypeScript
    • CSS architecture
    • API-first development
  • Establish engineering standards, development practices, and technical excellence across teams.

5. Stakeholder & Vendor Management

  • Partner with product teams, digital channels, UX/UI teams, and business stakeholders to deliver customer-focused digital experiences.
  • Collaborate with external technology partners, vendors, CMS providers, and hosting providers to ensure delivery quality and performance.
  • Represent web engineering in architecture forums, technology governance meetings, and digital strategy discussions.
  • Manage technical relationships and ensure vendor solutions align with enterprise standards.

Educational Qualifications

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in:
    • Computer Science

    • Related technical discipline

  • Postgraduate qualification such as:

  • 10–12 years’ experience in web engineering, software development, or digital platform delivery.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in engineering leadership roles.
  • Proven experience delivering large-scale, customer-facing web applications and enterprise portals.
  • Strong expertise in modern frontend frameworks, including:
    • React
    • Angular
    • Vue.js
  • Experience integrating web platforms with backend services, APIs, and enterprise systems.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Responsive web design
    • Accessibility standards (WCAG)
    • Web performance optimisation
    • Application security
  • Experience with cloud-native web delivery approaches, including:
    • Cloud platforms
    • Content Delivery Networks (CDNs)
    • Web application monitoring and observability tools
  • Experience managing engineering teams and delivering complex digital transformation initiatives.
