4G/5G Wireless & MW Back Office Engineer

The client is looking for a 4G/5G Wireless & MW Back Office Engineer to work a 6 month rolling contract based in South Africa (Johannesburg).

Key Responsibilities:

• Responsible for the daily operation, technical support, troubleshooting, and maintenance of 4G / 5G wireless products, Part-time responsibility for microwave link O&M.
• Responsible for the analysis, localization, and handling of product-related issues, outputting root cause analysis (RCA) and solutions, and promoting problem closure.
• Responsible for Back Office (BO) technical support, including remote fault analysis, configuration verification, log analysis, and on-site engineer technical support.
• Responsible for product software upgrades, version maintenance, health checks, preventative maintenance, and network inspections.
• Monitor the operation of the wireless network, analyze alarms, performance indicators (KPIs), and system logs, and promptly identify and resolve network risks.
• Collaborate with R&D, TAC, delivery teams, and customers to handle major or complex technical issues.
• Write technical documents, operation guides, troubleshooting manuals, and experience summaries to continuously improve the knowledge base.
• Continuously learn about new 5G technologies, products, and features, and be able to apply these technologies to actual projects.
• Participate in emergency response, on-call duty, and major network support work as needed by projects.
• Proactively optimize operation and maintenance processes, improving work efficiency through automation tools or scripts.
• 5*8 plus emergency stand-by on 7*24.

Technical & Domain Skills:

• 5G & Wireless: Strong understanding of 4G/5G RAN architecture, installation, configuration, and KPI troubleshooting.
• Microwave (MW): Fundamental working knowledge of MW link management and basic maintenance.

Systems & Networking:

• Proficient in Linux for system admin, log extraction, and diagnostics.
• Solid grasp of TCP/IP fundamentals, routing, and switching.
• Hands-on experience with packet analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark).

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with Python or Shell scripting for maintenance automation.
• Hands-on experience in 5G SA, 5G FWA, or Private Network deployments.
• Basic understanding of 5G Core architecture (AMF, SMF, UPF) and key protocols (NGAP, GTP-U, PFCP).
• Familiarity with virtualization platforms (VMware, KVM, Docker, K8s).
• Experience with telecom operators or international project delivery in South Africa/Sub-Saharan Africa.
