Set in the 80’s, Netflix’s Stranger Things has taken the world by storm. Through music and aesthetics, Stranger Things will give you full blown nostalgia. Long story short, a group of young kids unlock the world of the "Upside Down", in the small town of Hawkins and what happens next, you could not predict... However, there is a lot we can all learn from Stranger Things in the big wide world of Recruitment. (Warning: may contain spoilers!)
1.You Are Not Alone
Unlike Eleven in the Upside Down, you aren’t on your own. If you're working with Tangent, we have the best tools available to help find the perfect job or to even tweak your CV for it to scream suitability. We take our time. We know what our clients are looking for and we know what you are looking for, so don't be afraid to ask for our advice! Remember, friends don't lie.
2.“You still have that bat?... The one with the nails?”- Dustin
Like Steve Harrington, you always need to be prepared. Some clients will call you out of the blue or call you in for a face-to-face the same day we submit your CV. So, read everything your recruiter sends to you. Print off the full job specification, look up the company (think of the amount of times you've heard that dreaded question “what do you know about us?”) and if you're given the interviewers name, look at their LinkedIn and find common ground before even speaking to them! It’s a great ice breaker. Prep yourself fully for interviews, so you can swing that killer hit and get that dream job!
Do not waste time on those Recruiters that are actually just wasting your time. One of the main alarm bells is never getting any feedback, especially after an interview. These recruiters will suck away at your time with no positive results. Now I’m not saying shouting "GO AWAYYYY" down the phone to them is a good way to go about it (Mike learned the hard way that this does not work), but pursuing other avenues will be better for you. At Tangent International, we do our job so you can do yours. We pride ourselves in exceptional candidate service and care, something we were awarded for last week at the Recruitment International Awards and something we have been recognised for globally, 7 years running.
4.Be Brave!!
Both seasons of Stranger Things show the bravery of individual characters. From Eleven fighting the bullies (and Papa) in Season 1, to Steve and Bob risking their lives in Season 2, to Joyce Byers showing resilience and bravery in both seasons. So don't be scared to apply for that job we think you are perfect for. Even if it's on the other side of the world...
5."Should I stay or should I go?"
A poignant part of Season 1 is the scene with Jonathan and Willlistening to the song by The Clash. Should you stay or should you go?... Don't hesitate in leaving your home country for your dream job abroad, Tangent will support you with Visas, accommodation, flights, culture, transportation and more. We have a 24/7 Logistics and Compliance Team to help guide you every step of the way.
To conclude, Strangers Thing's can teach us a lot about the recruitment industry; You are not alone...we are here to help, always be prepared, don't waste your time with bad recruiters, be brave and trust your recruiter, take that leap and venture out to the world! At Tangent International, we pride ourselves in being the best at what we do, especially in candidate service and care. We have been recognised globally for this, over a consecutive number of years. Last week we won the award for The Best Candidate Service at the RI Awards 2017.
There are many more lessons that the hit Netflix show teaches us, but these are the 5things I would adopt when finding and working with a trusted recruitment agency, like Tangent International, to help you fulfil your dream career aspirations.
